Official Explanation:

This error occurs when attempting to archive a redo log with ARCn that is not specified in the current online redo log. ARCn is Oracle’s tool for maintaining multiple copies of redo logs. By default, redo logs are cycled through and archived so that multiple copies can act as backups in case of an unexpected failure.

Common Cases:

If the ARCHIVELOG mode is enabled, but the current log has already been archived, the ORA-00271 error may be raised.

Normal Procedure:

To correct this error, the following should be done:

1. Ensure that the ARCHIVELOG mode is enabled.

2. Verify that the Log Sequence Number (LSN) of the current log has been archived.

3. Archive the next available log in the sequence.
